Program Description

Since 2006, Soka University of America (SUA) has offered a non-degree Student Visitor Exchange Program to foster international academic collaboration and cultural exchange. This program allows both visiting and exchange students from partner institutions to enroll at SUA as full-time students for one or two semesters.

Student participants immerse themselves in SUA's liberal arts curriculum while engaging with its mission to promote global citizenship. The program facilitates cross-cultural academic experiences, enabling students to contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable world.

General Information

SUA’s Student Visitor Exchange Program operates for one or two semesters, depending on the agreement with the partner institution. Participants typically enroll in 12-15 credit hours per semester, with coursework conducted entirely in English. The curriculum spans multiple disciplines that are aligned with SUA's liberal arts mission.

Admission and Enrollment Criteria

Nomination by Home Institution: Applicants must be recommended by their home university based on academic standing and readiness for the program.
Application Essay: A statement of purpose outlining the student’s goals, motivations, and alignment with SUA's mission.
Academic Transcript: Official transcripts verifying strong academic performance.
English Proficiency: Non-native speakers must submit a TOEFL score (minimum 80) or equivalent.
Interview: A one-on-one interview is required for all future programs, ensuring alignment with program goals and student readiness. Existing programs may not require an interview for all participants.

Program Logistics

Eligibility: All students enrolled at partnering institutions are eligible for the program and are required to enroll full-time at SUA unless approved for a reduced course load.
- F-1 eligible students are required to comply with all Department of Homeland Security regulations, including maintaining lawful student status. International applicants who require F-1 visa sponsorship can apply for their Form I-20 through Soka University of America’s Office of International Student Services.
Mode of Delivery: Full-time and in-person.
Duration: One semester (16 weeks) or two semesters (academic year or 32 weeks).
Credit Hours: A full-time load of 12-15 credit hours per semester.
Registration: The full annual amount of the funding will apply to students with full-time status (at least 12 credits per semester). If a student is approved to be part-time, the funding will be prorated accordingly. When a student drops below full-time status before completing 60% of the term, the funding may be prorated or cancelled.
Expenses: Tuition, Room, and Board are waived; students must cover travel, insurance, and personal costs. Accommodation and meals are provided on campus.
Health Insurance: All students are required to be covered by a health insurance plan. Students without a waiver must purchase the SUA health insurance plan. Students who elect to provide their own insurance must show proof that it meets U.S. standards.
Engagement: Participants are encouraged to participate in campus activities and unique SUA courses that address global and enduring human questions.
Global Citizenship: Students are expected to demonstrate good citizenship towards their community, peers, and the university. If a student fails to exemplify the university’s standards of global citizenship, their university funding may be immediately withdrawn. Students have the right to appeal if there are extenuating circumstances.
