Course Audit Policy

Courses at SUA may be audited (i.e. attended without academic credit and with no record of enrollment) by current SUA students, faculty, staff, or alumni. Auditing is permitted only by the written consent of the instructor and the Dean of Faculty via the Request for Audit Form from the Office of the Registrar, which must be submitted during the add/drop period. Students enrolled in the SUA Graduate School are required to have permission from the Dean of Graduate Faculty to audit undergraduate courses. Course instructors may not allow unofficial participation in a course.

The instructor’s primary responsibility is to their officially enrolled students and participation in activities that require additional material, financial, or teaching resources (i.e. laboratory, fieldwork, field trips, or studio art courses) or individualized instruction (100- and 200-level language or writing courses) is not permitted. Students may only participate in the lecture/seminar parts of courses. Audited courses do not qualify for academic credit and do not apply toward academic degree requirements. Audited courses do not appear on transcripts, and the University will not supply documentation of auditing. Audited courses do not count toward load for financial aid eligibility or to attain full-time status.

Students enrolled in courses for academic credit who subsequently decide to audit must first drop the course and submit the Request for Audit Form by the add/drop deadline. Students who initially requested to audit but subsequently decide to enroll on a credit-bearing basis must enroll in the course before the add/drop deadline and will be placed at the end of any waitlists like any other student.

First-year students may not audit a class during their first semester. Students who have been suspended are not permitted to audit. Students may not audit a course for which they currently have a grade of incomplete (I). There is no limit to the number of courses an individual can request to audit per semester. A maximum of two people are permitted to audit any one course. An auditing student is expected to attend class regularly. The instructor may request that an auditing student stop attending for any of the following reasons: failure to attend, failure to participate, or disruptive behavior.
